

Completing the first Challenge Act for any area unlocks a Boss Gate Key, and completing all Challenge Acts with one character in an area will restore a bit of color to the Act's Challenge Area.

Like Stages, the player is assigned a Rank for each Challenge Act based on different factors for each Challenge Act. A common Challenge Act for eighteen of them is the Doppelganger Race mission: The while the others focus on the following themes: Speed, Technique, Doppelganger, Friends, Enemy, Item, Ring, Juggle, and Rescue. Both Acts for each Stage in the game has five Challenge Acts to complete, with each set being assigned respectively to Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic. In this game, they can be accessed via the Challenge Act Gates, which are small thematic structures around each individual Stage Entrance in White Space. In the console/PC version of the game, Missions are known as Challenge Acts.

Typically though, Missions serve to bring the player closer to the full completion of their respective games. Upon completing a Mission, the player is usually rewarded with additional game content. Such tasks center around the gameplay elements and objectives in the different games, and can be anything from completing a level within a time limit, collecting a specified amount of Rings, defeating a required amount of enemies, etc. Generally speaking, when starting a Mission, the player is put into a level with the task of achieving a certain goal or fulfilling a certain condition, which is given to them before beginning the Mission. A Mission usually takes place in a mode separate from the main stages or in modified versions of existing levels.
